Functional narrative

The initial stages of Pseudomonas infection depend on the type IV pilus-mediated adherence of the pathogen to the mucosal cells of a susceptible host. Type IV pilin monomers assemble to form fibers called pili that are required for a variety of bacterial functions. Each pilin protein contains a functional receptor-binding site; however, binding sites are only displayed at the tip of the pilus. This region is proposed to be the point of first contact between bacterial and host cells.
