Functional narrative

Hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (HPRT) belongs to the family of phosphoribosyltransferases (PRTs) which catalyze the transfer of the ribose 5’-phosphate group from 5’-phosphoribosyl-alpha-1’-pyrophosphate (PRPP) to a variety of secondary substrates in a salvage pathway to obtain purine nucleotides for cellular metabolism. The HPRT active-site loop is linked directly to the other subunit as part of a mechanism that is believed to provide method for communication between units of the functional dimmer.
