Functional narrative

The bacterial envelope stress response is modulated by the binding of RseB to RseA. Various stress signals are transduced into the cytoplasmic compartment through the periplasmic membrane and thus activate the genes required for the defense or recovery of the cells against the stress. The periplasmic domain of RseA is cleaved by the activated DegS in stress conditions and the cytoplasmic domain of RseA is digested by RseP. This sequential digestion of RseA results in the release of sigmaE, which ultimately enhances the transcription of the gene involved in stress response. Negative regulator of rpoE.
