Functional narrative

Promotes the exchange of Ran-bound GDP by GTP. Involved in the regulation of onset of chromosome condensation in the S phase. Binds to the chromatin. RCC1/Ran complex (together with other proteins) acts as a component of a signal transmission pathway that detects unreplicated DNA. (UniProt). The binding of RCC1 (regulator of chromosome condensation 1) to chromatin is critical for cellular processes such as mitosis, nucleocytoplasmic transport, and nuclear envelope formation because RCC1 recruits the small GTPase Ran (Ras-related nuclear protein) to chromatin and sets up a Ran-GTP gradient around the chromosomes. (England, 2010)
