Functional narrative

Function: Functions as soluble gibberellin (GA) receptor. GA is an essential hormone that regulates growth and development in plants. Binds with high affinity the biologically active gibberellin GA4, but has no affinity for the biologically inactive GAs. In response to GA, interacts with specific DELLA proteins, known as repressors of GA-induced growth, and targets them for degradation via proteasome. Seems to be required for GA signaling that controls root growth, seed germination, stem elongation and flower development. Partially redundant with GID1B and GID1C.
SUBUNIT: Interacts (via N-terminus) with the DELLA proteins GAI, RGA, RGL1, RGL2 and RGL3 (via N-terminus) in a GA-dependent manner. Subcellular Location: Nucleus (By similarity).
TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Widely expressed.
DISRUPTION PHENOTYPE: No visible phenotype under normal growth condition.
SIMILARITY: Belongs to the 'GDXG' lipolytic enzyme family.

Comments:
According to Murase et al (2008), "GID1A is highly sensitive to proteases in the unbound state but resistant in the GA-bound state and even more resistant in the DELLA-bound state."

PDB structure 2ZSH is a complex of Gibberellin receptor GID1A (DP00723), GA3 (Gibberellic Acid) and the DELLA domain of DELLA protein GAI (DP00724). PDB structure 2ZSI is a complex of Gibberellin receptor GID1A (DP00723), GA4 and the DELLA domain of DELLA protein GAI (DP00724).

Murase et al (2008) state the following, "Application of GA3 to Arabidopsis showed that it is an active GA, although it does not seem to be an endogenous hormone in this plant. GA4 is the major bioactive GA in Arabidopsis." However, "the bound GA3 superimposes onto GA4 with a small root mean squared deviation."
